project: FracturesNo. II in the series, Fractures. Oil painting on canvas, 26 x 15 in.
The series explores the colors and textures of the exposed basalt in the Columbia River Gorge. Tuck describes her inspiration as follows: “I am a person of extremes. And I have found the Columbia River Gorge a place of extremes. From its early beginnings of volcanic upheaval and continuing evolution, the exposed basalt is fractured and weathered. The edges appear sharp as razors in one outcropping, smooth as glass in another; yet another form of the basalt is rounded and pitted. ¶ I have found in my work of recording these fantastic rocks a symbol of how I see the natural world: dynamic, changing, and beautiful. ¶ With my series, fractures, I have tried to paint this landscape, in all its power and wonder.” OTHER PAINTINGS IN THE SERIES, FRACTURES:No. I in the series, Fractures.
