project: Historic Solana Beach
The painting shows what’s now known as Solana Beach (formerly, Lockwood Mesa) at the turn of the 19th century, and is after an old black-and-white photograph, dated 1900, held by the San Diego Natural History Museum. Seeking to better understand the historic view, Tuck states that “I actually found the exact location where the photographer stood” in 1900 when the original documentary photo was taken, noting wryly that the area where she was born and raised “sure has changed.” The wooden structure shown in the painting and original photo is believed to have been some kind of facility for loading sugar beet.
